Fabric Guide

My first bespoke suit: what fabric should I choose?

Start with one. You may end up with several.

The short answer

For a first bespoke suit, choose VBC Perennial Super 110’s or Cerruti Hollywood. Both are versatile, easy to wear and excellent value.

If you’re having your first bespoke suit made, choosing the fabric can feel overwhelming. There are thousands of options, and your tailor will probably have plenty of books to show you.

It doesn’t have to be complicated.

For a first suit, two collections I would recommend are VBC Perennial Super 110’s and Cerruti Hollywood.

VBC Perennial Super 110’s is VBC’s best-selling collection for a reason. It is versatile, comfortable and easy to wear. It works for business, special occasions and almost everything in between.

It is also affordable and excellent value for money, especially for a fabric from one of Italy’s most respected mills.

And Perennial Super 110’s isn’t just a great choice for your first suit. With so many colours and patterns, there is enough variety to have several VBC Super 110’s suits in your wardrobe, each with its own character.

Cerruti Hollywood is another excellent starting point. It is a two-ply twill, 290–300g, making it a very versatile choice for tailoring.

Know what you’re buying

If you’re looking for VBC fabric, there is a simple detail to look for when your tailor shows you the VBC books:

The fabric codes should begin with “VBC”.

The composition and weight are also clearly written on the fabric label, so you can see exactly what you’re buying.

There are plenty of other collections to explore later. But for your first bespoke suit, VBC Perennial Super 110’s and Cerruti Hollywood are two very good places to start.
